What a Shed Skin Tells You
A shed skin (also called a slough) is left behind when a snake outgrows its old skin — a process called ecdysis. Snakes shed several times per year, more frequently when young and growing. Finding a skin indoors confirms a snake has been living in your home. The skin's size gives a rough indication of the snake's length. Common locations: attics, crawl spaces, basements, behind appliances, and inside wall voids.
How to Identify the Species from the Skin
Shed skins retain scale patterns that allow experienced technicians to identify the species — or at least narrow it down significantly. Key things to note: the overall length, whether the scales appear keeled (ridged) or smooth, and the pattern if visible. This helps us know what we're looking for.
