Why Snakes End Up in Pools
Pools attract snakes for several reasons. The water draws prey animals — frogs, toads, and lizards — that snakes hunt. Snakes also fall in accidentally while hunting along pool edges at night. In Florida's heat, snakes may seek water to cool down. Cottonmouths (water moccasins) are particularly common pool visitors in Northeast Florida due to their affinity for water.
What Not to Do
Do not reach into the pool to grab the snake. Do not use a pool net to try to scoop it out — a cornered snake will bite. Do not let children or pets near the pool. Even a non-venomous snake will bite defensively when handled, and misidentifying a cottonmouth as a harmless water snake is a common and dangerous mistake.
After Removal: Preventing Recurrence
