How Snakes Get Into Lanais
Screen enclosures develop gaps over time — at the base of the screen where it meets the concrete, around door frames, at corners, and where the screen attaches to the frame. Small snakes can fit through surprisingly tiny openings. Snakes enter lanais hunting frogs, lizards, and geckos that congregate near the light and warmth of the enclosure, especially at night.
Snakes Commonly Found in Lanais
The most common lanai snakes in Northeast Florida are the Florida brown snake, ringneck snake, and juvenile rat snakes — all small, non-venomous species that enter through tiny gaps. However, larger snakes including corn snakes and black racers also enter lanais. Cottonmouths are occasionally found in lanais adjacent to water. Any snake in an enclosed space should be treated with caution.
Repair and Prevention
